Dear Families,
At Southwest, student safety is our top priority. To ensure our staff and students are prepared for any situation, we regularly practice the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) developed by the "I Love U Guys" Foundation.
On Thursday, January 8th, shortly before the start of the school day (around 8:15), we will be conducting a "Hold" drill. A Hold is used when the hallways need to be kept clear, but there is no immediate threat to the building. This is most commonly used for a medical emergency in a corridor or a maintenance issue (like a large spill) that requires students to stay in their rooms.
During a Hold:
* The Directive: "In your room or area. Clear the halls."
* The Action: Students and staff remain in their classrooms or designated areas.
* Inside the Classroom: It is "business as usual." Teachers continue their lessons, and students move freely within the room.
* The Goal: We simply keep the hallways empty until the "All Clear" is announced.
Why are we practicing this?
While a Hold is one of our most common responses, practicing it ensures that students know to quickly clear the halls and that staff can account for everyone effectively.
What should you expect?
Because this drill is occurring shortly before the school day begins, you may notice a slight delay in hallway transitions if you are dropping your student off at that exact moment. No one is allowed to leave or enter the building during a Hold. Please do not be alarmed; this is a controlled, planned exercise to keep our school safe.
We encourage you to talk with your student about the drill and the importance of following instructions during any safety exercise. You can find more information about the SRP at iloveuguys.org.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership in keeping our school community safe.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
I'm writing to ask for your help with a quick but important daily habit. It is essential for students to bring a fully charged Chromebook to school every day to participate in their classes.
Lately, we've had a significant number of students arriving with uncharged Chromebooks. Many students have mentioned that they are plugging their devices in at night, but they are still uncharged in the morning. This often happens if the charger isn't fully connected to the wall outlet or to the Chromebook itself.
Here's the simple check that would help immensely: When your student plugs in their Chromebook at night, please remind them to look for the small charging light on the side of the device. If this light is on, it confirms they have a solid connection and the Chromebook is actively charging. I would also highly encourage you to have your students charge their Chromebooks in an area/room outside of their bedroom.
Thank you so much for your partnership in reinforcing this small but crucial step. It will make a big difference in helping your student start their day prepared and ready to learn.

Come check out Southwest Middle School's spring play, "Murder at the Art Show."
Date: Friday, May 2nd
Time: 7:30pm
Where: Southwest Little Theater
Cost: $5 for Students and Adults

Southwest Middle School had their exploratory day pick'em event and fundraiser celebration at the end of the day today. Students met the goal of selling $15,000 worth of items so several teachers agreed to have the top three earners from each team pie them in the face. Since students sold over $22,000 worth of items the top earner from each grade was able to shave Principal Johnson's head.
